Sexual Abuse Prevention Program

As of January 3, 2022 all Ontario Certified Teachers, applicants, and re-applicants are required to successfully complete the online Sexual Abuse Prevention Program. The Program is offered at no cost.

Ontario Certified Teachers can access the Program by signing into the Members area.

Applicants can access the Program by signing into their application status page.

ONTARIO CERTIFIED TEACHERS

All individuals who were members of the College in Good Standing as of January 3, 2022 must successfully complete the Program.

Ontario Certified Teachers can access the Program by signing into the Members area.

If an Ontario Certified Teacher does not complete the Program by the deadline noted in the Members area, the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program status on their certificate and public register page will change from “To Be Completed” to “Incomplete.” The only way to change that status is to successfully complete the Program.

ONTARIO APPLICANTS

Ontario applicants who completed their application on or after January 1, 2022 must successfully complete the Program to be considered eligible for certification.

INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED TEACHER (IET) APPLICANTS

IET applicants are individuals who completed a program of professional education outside of Canada, which led to certification to teach in that jurisdiction.

IET applicants who completed their application on or after January 1, 2022 must successfully complete the Program to be considered eligible for certification.

IET applicants can access the Program by signing into their application status page.

LABOUR MOBILITY APPLICANTS (OLMA)

Labour mobility applicants are teachers who have been certified to teach in another Canadian province or territory and are certified with the College pursuant to the Ontario Labour Mobility Act.

OLMA applicants who are certified on or after January 3, 2022 must complete the Program within one year of their certification date.

OLMA applicants can access the Program by signing into their application status page.

WHEN IS AN APPLICATION CONSIDERED COMPLETE?

By law, the College cannot begin evaluating an application until it is complete. A complete application includes the receipt of all required documentation and fees by the College. Please see the Registration Guides to learn what documents and fees are required to complete your application for certification with the College.

NOTATIONS

On January 3, 2022, a notation was added to the public register and Certificates of Qualification and Registration to indicate whether an Ontario Certified Teacher has successfully completed the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program.

This introductory video was created by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection Inc. specifically for Ontario Certified Teachers, as well individuals who are applying for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers and are taking the Commit to Kids Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training. Commit to Kids is a program of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.

The Sexual Abuse Prevention Program:

  • was developed in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P), a national leader in advocating for youth safety. You can learn more about C3P on their website
  • provides an updated understanding of healthy professional relationships with students and recognizing warning signs related to grooming
  • offers advice on supporting a student that is initiating their disclosure process. Students that feel believed and supported through their disclosure are more likely to recover
  • is available In French and English
  • is entirely online and can be completed over multiple sessions
  • is only considered complete after the individual has viewed all modules and passed the assessment component with a minimum score of 80%
  • can be retaken by individuals who do not successfully complete initial attempts.
