College of Teachers Council announced

March 10 1997

TORONTO College Registrar Margaret Wilson today announced the first Governing Council for the Ontario College of Teachers.

The Council is made up of 31 members, 17 of whom were elected by their peers in the teaching profession. The remaining 14 members were appointed, subject to review by the Standing Committee on Government Agencies, as public representatives by the province.

"A new era in the development of the teaching profession in Ontario begins with the establishment of the first Council of the College," said Wilson. "For the first time, teachers will be directly involved in setting and maintaining teaching standards and in addressing issues of professional conduct, professional education, and ongoing professional needs."

"I am delighted that the College now has 31 qualified and enthusiastic members on the Council," said John Snobelen, Minister of Education and Training. "The Ontario College of Teachers will give new autonomy to the teaching profession, and I know teachers will welcome the opportunity that self-regulation can provide."

The Ontario College of Teachers is the largest self-regulating professional body in Canada with approximately 180,000 members. Membership in the College is open to all qualified Ontario teachers who wish to maintain their teaching certificate.

Ballots for the 17 elected members were tabulated on February 3, 1997. Of the 162,963 ballots mailed to members, 52,642 - or 32 per cent were returned. The election was audited by the independent accounting firm, KPMG, and the results presented to the College Registrar.

"Voter response was unprecedented," said Wilson. "Compared to other self-regulating bodies in the province, we are extremely pleased and encouraged by the response from our members."
