Conference attendees examine how best to protect the public

You don’t need superhuman strength, telepathy or the ability to time travel when it comes to protecting the public interest. What you do need is conversation, knowledge and adaptability, which is why professional regulators from across Ontario and around the world are gathering in Toronto tomorrow at Inspiring Public Confidence 2018 to share effective practices, learn from each other and discuss new and better ways to protect and engage the public.
“Our conference challenges people to look at regulation differently with thoughtful content, provocative debate and inspiring discussion,” says Conference Chair Joe Jamieson, OCT, Deputy Registrar, Ontario College of Teachers. “Regulation is more than just issuing licenses, it’s about developing professions, upholding standards and, most importantly, protecting the public.”
More than 200 local and international delegates, including school board administrators, trustees and regulators of teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, social workers and more will attend. In total, there are 20 workshops, with topics ranging from risk management to communications, to ethics to violence prevention.
Keynote speakers for this conference include:
- Marc-André Blanchard, Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations;
- Harry Cayton, Chief Executive of the Professional Standards Authority;
- Rex Murphy, Social commentator, Editorialist and distinct Canadian Voice, and;
- Margaret Trudeau, Celebrated Canadian and Mental Health Advocate.
“We want our conference to inspire attendees to think creatively and discuss innovative ideas that will better protect the public interest,” says College Chair, Angela De Palma, OCT. “It is our hope and intent that the conversations originating here will continue well beyond the conference.”
