Professional suitability
Before applying to teach in Ontario, we recommend taking our Application Eligibility Assessment to find out how likely you are to meet our regulatory requirements.
You will be asked questions about your educational background and (if applicable) work experience.
As part of your application, you will also need to provide a Canadian criminal record report, applicant declaration and statement of professional standing.
Canadian criminal record report
This can be obtained from any police service in Canada, or from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, if you reside outside Canada. Your report must:
- be no older than six months old from the date the College receives it
- include your full name and any previous names (for example, resulting from a marriage)
- indicate that a full search was done on all your names (including first, middle, last and any former names) using the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database.
Applicant declaration
Our applicant declaration asks about:
- your certification to teach in other jurisdictions
- any previous professional disciplinary actions against you
- criminal background, if applicable.
This provides a history of your teaching experience and confirms your licence to teach in the jurisdiction in question. It must:
- verify your certificate or licence has never been suspended, cancelled or revoked
- be sent to us directly from the licencing authority
- be less than one year old from the date we receive it.
