Council Meeting Summary
During its March 21 meeting, College Council:
- received a quarterly report from the Chair of Council.
- received a quarterly report from the Registrar & CEO.
- approved changes to the College Bylaws related to the membership status Inactive/Non-Practicing, effective when legislative changes come into force.
- Approved the following requests to the Minister of Education:
- to enact new regulations under the College’s Act to permit the College to establish a process to administratively suspend members who do not complete the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program before July 2, 2025.
- to amend the Teachers’ Qualifications Regulation (TQR) to reduce the work experience requirement for Technological Education teachers from five years to four years.
- to amend the TQR to remove the post-secondary degree requirement to be granted the PQP Part 1 qualification (principals qualifications). This would include the creation of equivalency pathways for divisional qualifications, specialist qualifications and graduate post-secondary credit requirements.
- to work with College staff to determine how the reintroduction of the Math Proficiency Test impacts applicants and develop consequential amendments to the TQR.
- received a report from the Audit and Finance Subcommittee and approved the following motions:
- That Council approve a contribution to the restricted cash reserve in the amount of $8,760,565, representing the 2023 year-end surplus.
- That Council accept the December 31, 2023 audited financial statements of the Ontario College of Teachers as presented.
- received a report of the Investigation Committee.
- received various correspondence.
- moved to a closed briefing and development session following the adjournment of the Council meeting.
