Duty to Report Advisory Updated

July 10 2018

The College has updated its Professional Advisory on the Duty to Report to reflect the introduction of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017 (CYFSA).

The advisory reminds Ontario Certified Teachers that they have a duty to report suspected abuse and/or neglect of children and youth.

The Ontario College of Teachers Act and the Professional Misconduct Regulation have also been updated to reflect the new CYFSA.

In addition to updating all CYFSA references, the revised advisory reflects the increase in the maximum fine for non-compliance with the duty to report to $5,000, and clarifies that although the duty to report does not apply to youth who are 16 or 17, teachers can still report to Children’s Aid Societies if they are concerned youth who are 16 or 17 are in need of protection.
